Mt Huber
September 11-13, 2009 One of the first significant peaks that Kain guided for the Alpine Club of Canada, at their summer camp at Lake O'Hara in 1909, was 3368 m Mt Huber, in Yoho Park

A couple of dozen ACC members joined several from the CKCS on the weekend of September 11-13 at the ACC Elizabeth Parker Hut to commemorate this event.{C}
A hundred years ago, beside the fire at that historic mountaineering camp, visiting dignitary Edward Whymper, of Matterhorn fame, implored those assembled to “…live, live, while you can. We’re born to live, but born to die…. Whatever you set your hands to do, do it with all your might…. Act well your part, there the honour lies….”

We took Whymper's advice to heart, and several of us launched an ascent of Mt Huber, while others chose to spend a relaxing weekend hiking, photographing and letting the wonders of nature take hold.
The highlight for many was the Kain play, "As Far As I Can Take You", written by Laurie Schwartz of Parks Canada Mountain WIT troupe and performed brilliantly by Philip Nugent.
Kudos to Laurie and Phil for providing us with an endearing glimpse into Canadian mountaineering's past. And a special thanks is due to Lawrence White, Executive Director of The ACC for his organizational work, the Lake O'Hara Trail Club for refreshments after the play, Lake O'Hara lodge for offering to host the play if the weather had turned sour. And to all of you for sharing your love of the mountains in what has to be the penultimate location for a young Austrian to begin his Canadian guiding career.

We've posted some photos from the weekend at http://gallery.me.com/endlessknot#101157.
The next Kain event will be on Nov 5 at the Banff Mountain Book Festival, when Pat gives a slide show about Kain's legacy, and the fun events and projects that The ACC and Conrad Kain Centennial Society have collaborated on this year. This will be followed immediately by Philip Nugent's final public performance (this year) of the Kain play.
Of special note, Laurie and Phil plan to take the show on the road in early November to school kids in Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Fernie and Creston.
